heavy.com (which i've never heard of until now) did a "behind the music that sucks" on the strokes.
everything that i've ever read or watched making fun of the strokes has been pretty predictable and based wholy on the obvious (and generally wrong) stereotypes that have followed the strokes from the beginning. i've been itching for a more insightful and clever poking fun of the strokes, but i doubt i'll ever get it.
this one falls to everyting nme has already played out (julian's dad, homoeroticism, etc) but with a twist... putting the strokes on the television show different strokes.
not really funny.
not really worth your time. i want the last few minutes of my life back.

i got my computer back on saturday and am thrilled to discover that all my music was still on there. the apple repair people deserve a medal. i love them.
now i need to get an external hard drive for all the music i've collected. but i'm stoked about having all this new music for the new school year.
in bigger news, i started watching the clip of kevin federline performing on the teen choice awards last night, and i had to stop. i'm convinced this guy has no real friends , because i'd hope if he did someone would be kind enough to be cruel enough to tell him what an ass he is making of himself. (but it seems that britney still has a vocal teen following. good for her.)

ok dudes. this is taking way too much of my time. which was fine when i had nothing to do, but unfortunately it's back to reality now.
i'm keeping this list here for sharing communities when i make requests and so people can download the albums i've already uploaded. except i'm taking down the song part because it is too fucking long.
but no more "free" uploading. i'll fulfill the comments made thus far, but that's it.

so.
what a day.
my ibook got mad at me and decided to stop working.
i took it to the genius bar (steve jobs must have fun naming things) and luckily they are going to repair it for free. but it's going to take a week or so.
but i'm going to lose all my data.... which is basically just my music because smart me backed up everything else last week (thank god or i would have lost my picture with mr. julian casablancas. even though it's a crappy camera phone picture, i would have been upset to lose it.)
so i guess that solves my problem of having too much music. i saw the problem coming and so i started backing up my itunes library, but didn't even make it through the t's (going backwards up the alphabet by artist name). i got all the "the" bands though.
looks like i'll be a downloading fiend for the last free week before school starts up again.
aaargh.

i've uploaded these albums (& song) for various communities, so i might as well share them all here.
***note- the riaa says that if you download music without paying/permission you have to delete it after 24 hours of previewing otherwise they will kill your dog or something. (please don't sue me.)
islands- return to the sea http://www.sendspace.com/file/cj96vg
cramps- songs the lord taught us http://www.sendspace.com/file/nli0ok
death cab for cutie- transatlanticism http://www.sendspace.com/file/7ecgia
daniel johnston- rock'n'roll/ega (just a song off his "fun" album) http://www.sendspace.com/file/pt8k72
all files are zip to m4a (yay itunes). except the song, which is just m4a. by the way that song is in empire records, right before the GWAR video, but it isn't on the soundtrack. and by the way again, islands is the new band of two of the former members of the unicorns and is indie pop genius gold. the unicorns is just another (canadian) band like death from above 1979 that died way before they should of. but islands is promising.

Since reading Apexa's lovely post, I've been thinking a lot about this. (And she has since posted her "list")
I would hesitate to say that any band has really "changed" my life (in a profound way)... but maybe sometime down the road I will look back on this time and see what kind of impact music really had on me. It's a little exciting to think about, though.

| what's going on with me... aujourd'hui |
[ Aug 12, 2006 - 12:05 pm] |

i got an email from another one of my fall professors. i am already freaking out, and i've only heard from 2 of my 6 classes. i am going to have an amazing amount of reading this term.
i need to get a new ipod. first of all my current one is pretty old (its not even in colour) and is probably going to break down any day now. second of all, my music is no longer going to fit on it. i need the 60gb one. but since i don't want to pay for it, i've decided that as long as it works i am fine with picking and choosing what music goes on it.
until now i've kept my itunes library purposefully streamlined to avoid this. but i realized that it is ridiculous to have my whole library on there because it would be impossible to listen to it all before the battery died anyway. i guess i just like having the choice to listen to whatever; it's like when i overpack for a weekend trip. i know i'll never wear all those clothes, but i need options.
damn apple for getting me addicted to their products.

on an oldish episode of gilmore girls the other day, lane's band (with sebastian bach....) played a cover of "head on" by the pixies.
my favorite pixies song.
i don't know what else to say. (the cover wasn't that great, but better than you would expect from a fake tv show band).

the long goodbye |

i've always held the theory that "arrested development" has had the most perfect cast ever. (the past tense is so sad). i always found it hard to pick a favorite character, but some of my favorite moments have come from michael cera's impeccable portrayal of the awkward george michael bluth. his timing is unbelievable.
i still love me my jason bateman (and michael cera is really too young for me to lust after).
but buy the dvds and watch it and see what i mean.
the point is, that i recently discovered via myspace (it's not pure evil afterall) that michael cera has a band!
the long goodbye
it seems to be him and his friend but they aren't bad. i may be biased because of 'the development', but listen and give it a shot.

i don't feel the need to explain myself further.

i really like bradley on this season of project runway. i don't care if he wins or anything, i just want to give him a hug or be his friend or something.
he's like this season's andrae for me... not necessarily the one i am rooting for talent-wise, but the one i like to watch and want to chat up.
i'm not sure who i want to win. i kind of like half the people that are left, and hate the other half.
and i'm still kinda bummed that daniel v. didn't win last season.

i've been doing some lame traditional summer stuff like laying at the pool and going to movies so i've been away from the computer a lot.
i don't like children. and i don't like peeling. but the pool is so relaxing.
john tucker must die is actually better than you'd think it would be. plus "the other tucker" is cute.
i have also started on my massive reading list for the fall semester. i am going to die somewhere at the end of september. if i make it to fall break i will be amazed.

everyone in america is a reality tv star. we all live our lives as if a camera is there to capture our every step- as if an audience sees us through the eyes of third person objective viewer.
this inflated sense of self-importance has dragged our society down through the mud while making us believe the dirt that now covers us is what makes us so great.
we live in a world of happy surfaces. diamond crusted dreams haunt the sleepwalkers as they chase the model east or west.
we watch each other -on the street, on tv- and we compare, we size up, we rationalize our actions by generalizing our competition.
we are the star of the show- the reason for its existence. the earth moves in a scientific pattern of unmatched regularity. but we give it color.
we look outwards instead of inwards to see what we want and what we need.
the opinion of strangers means more than our family and friends. we live out a script that we didn't write- just approved through our grateful nonchalance and blind conformity.
there is no exciting, no creative, even the most offensive and shocking is following its own formula. controversy has been packaged, planned, re-released with bonus features and new commentaries.
we recycle brilliance while we destroy trees.
trends are no longer set but decided upon. the survey is out, the public is living under the false pretense of originality.
women have moved past filling the role of perfect housewive to the more demanding and more constricting multi-tasking everything a man can do i can do better but still be beautiful role.
this is the country i live in, the country i grow in, the country i represent.
my home.

musical taste is subjective, people.
it's okay to like a band/album/song/fillintheblank so much that you (metaphorically or literally) cream your panties. it's okay to try to verbalize this feeling and share it with the world through music criticism/journalism.
but don't be snotty about it. don't take a tone that anyone who disagrees with your reaction to the music in question has a "bad" taste in music and thus is a lower life form.
get over yourself. enjoy your music however you want, and let people enjoy their's however they want.
music is a good thing. it should only bring about other good things. if you really hate a band/album/song so much, pick up a guitar or sit down at a piano and write something better.
.......and i'm not saying it's not okay to criticize a band/album/song/musician because you don't like them or don't like something about them. that's healthy and part of the human condition.
but do it a way that promotes mature open respectful discussion. don't do it a way that automatically knocks down anyone who tries to say something different.
we don't all have to get along.
.......and how sad would it be if everyone in the world just listened to what "pitchfork" approved. pretty fucking sad.

i once had a dream (like every true music enthusiasist) to be a music journalist in the vein of lester bangs or andy greenwald.
but now i feel that the only way to truly express how a particular song or band or album or musical moment makes me feel, i'd have to "become" a musician. i've always considered music journalism to be at least partly futile, but my mind has been remarkably lucid lately, and i've just now fully accepted the pointlessness of putting music into words..... while still fully understanding why people try to do it.
don't listen to me anymore, i'm babbling... here is leonard bernstein:
(on why people still try to write about music despite always falling short): "in the great tradition of man burrowing through the darkness with his mind, hitting his head on cave walls, and sometimes perceiving a pinpoint of light, we can at least try to explain; in fact, there's no stopping us."
(and mr. b affirming what i've said above): "and so the only way one can really say anything about music is to write music."
both those quotes come from his book, "the joy of music," which i found at my local library. i suggest you try reading this book along with aaron copland's "what to listen for in music."
there's a quote i like from that book that is also related to this post's cause: “the whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'is there a meaning to music?' my answer would be, 'yes.' and 'can you state in so many words what the meaning is?' my answer to that would be, 'no.'”
that's all.
